INSTRUCTOR’S STATEMENT:
Art making is a mindful exploration in relationship to a medium and its materials through which we come to know ourselves, which in turn, feeds our practice.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Intermedia is an experiential exploration of media, materials and interdisciplinary practices. Building on a foundational structure from 2D-4D, students experiment with a variety of materials and methods to integrate and express personal, cultural and spiritual identities. This course is repeatable and designed to challenge artists with varying levels of multi-media experience, that is, none to advanced. Projects evolve organically from the student’s current repertoire of techniques in combination with expanded methods of creative expression covered in the course.
Text, painting, collage, mixed-media, sculpture, installation, performance, film, video and sound (in various combinations) are introduced and examined through reading, research, studio demonstrations and course projects. This course is profoundly experimental; risk-taking and mistake-making are required experiences in the expansion of an individual’s creative process and practice. Discussions and critiques stimulate conceptual acumen, while skill-building workshops advance technical proficiency.
Strong emphasis is placed on developing resourcefulness and collaboration; or finding new and personal ways for learning whatever the work itself suggests.
This course also offers students a special challenge - to listen to and trust your own inner experience of truth and meaning as the basis for the creation of personally (and universally) significant artwork.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
• Examine interdisciplinary approaches to art and explore contemporary historical perspectives.
• Introduce applicable foundations for working in 2D, 3D and 4D.
• Facilitate hands-on interaction with a range of media, from traditional to digital.
• Create symbolic, visual vocabulary for authentic, personal expression.
• Initiate artistic collaboration and cross-disciplinary experimentation
• Gain practical, technical & logistical experience in the production of a live group art event.
TEXTS: Handouts TBD.

2D, 3D, and 4D MIXED/INTERMEDIA PROJECTS
Building from thoughts (or words), through the structural mediums of two and three dimensional space and the 4th dimension of time, students expand an initial concept through multiple stages of evolution. In addition to individual projects, students work collaboratively to create an “Intermedia Group Show”, an exhibition/event showcasing their final 4d/or time-based projects.
PERSONAL BLOG
Students will be required to create and maintain an online blog, chronicling their
personal musings and experiences as an interdisciplinary artist. 10 entries with images.
ALTERED BOOK JOURNAL
Students will be required to keep a visual journal; Entries should include random scraps of detritus- collected accumulations from daily living, ie: newspaper clippings, magazine articles, photographs, ticket stubs, doodles, personal entries, etc. This collection is your own personal, musing space; a record of thoughts, impressions, ideas, impulses, experiences, emotions, dreams, fears, projects, etc. throughout the semester. Entries should be highly subjective reflections about your world at large and your own inner response. Include written entries as well as three dimensional objects. Use it to track your creative process. Watch your ideas- what spawns them, how are you expanding them? How do your personal experiences feed your work and practice?
Your commitment to your art practice is reflected in your participation in the course. If you must miss a class, consult with instructor in advance. Both workshops are mandatory for passing.
